Art in the Centre of the City

Kunst in der Mitte

Art and culture are good for a city’s image. But much more important is artists’ and creative workers’ long-term contribution to a city’s positive development. Artistic creativity builds future potential, generates an aura that radiates to other areas of society and helps make a city more attractive. That’s what makes art important and why its place is at the centre of the city. We address this topic in a variety of ways, one example being the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin.

When in America, you realize that Berlin is a metropolis of the arts. Berlin just doesn’t yet know it. - Dieter Rosenkranz

Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin

For two years – from September 2008 to August 2010 – the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin on Berlin’s Schlossplatz (Palace Square) provided a unique platform for artistic creativity in the centre of the city. The figures are impressive: a total of 17 exhibitions featuring works by more than 800 Berlin-based artists, over 150 supporting events and 212,500 visitors.

No other city in the world currently boasts so many German and international visual artists. Thanks to its prime location within the city, the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin underlined the key role played by art and culture as a driving force in Berlin’s future development and helped activate the city’s artistic network.

The Temporäre Kunsthalle was made possible by the Stiftung Zukunft Berlin and the generous funding provided by its founder, Dieter Rosenkranz, and other patrons and sponsors. They made available EUR 950,000 to support its construction and a similar sum to help cover running costs. The Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin was a model of civic engagement in culture.

Whether the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin will prompt the creation of a new type of permanent art space to showcase the city’s creative potential – that will be the subject of public discussion in our debate forum “StreitOrt – A Hall of Art for Berlin”.
