Forum Berlin

Forum Berlin Front

Politics and Academia in Dialogue promotes dialogue between international political players and key research figures. The biennial conferences provide a platform for discussing urgent issues and challenges affecting the entire international community. With the "Forum Berlin" conference, we are seeking to showcase Berlin as a city that is leading the way in reflecting on the opportunities and risks presented to the world by the post-1989 era.

"Europe is well positioned to assume an active global leadership role – along with other partners." - Thomas Risse
"If we believe that Europe should bring its influence to bear on international events..., then we must regain people’s support for the European unification process." - Michael Zürn

Berlin: A Place to Discuss Global Questions

In our networked global society, local events often have dramatic repercussions on the international community. Global problems call for internationally coordinated political strategies. International policy-making operates in a complex supranational environment – to a greater extent than national policy-making. Moreover, it is frequently influenced by national historical factors and is subject to interaction with business and society. There is a need for cross-disciplinary discussion of potential solutions to the problems facing society. And if strategies are to be successful in the long term, they must be based on a dialogue between political practitioners and academia.
Berlin is the ideal place for such a future-shaping dialogue. Over the past two decades, it has become home not only to federal ministries, embassies and a variety of associations and federations. In the immediate vicinity of the institutions concerned with day-to-day policy-making, we now have prestigious, globally operating research institutes, political science foundations and private universities, alongside the city’s three major universities, forming a source of cross-disciplinary knowledge about the interplay of political and social conditions – expertise that we must harness.
