Europe Bottom-Up

Europe can not be thought of without its cities, citizens and regions. These elements embody in particular the cultural energy that makes Europe alive through its stories, its democratic values, its convictions, its diversity. Despite its success, in the past, the European Union has mainly been developed from the top down. What Europe urgently needs now is lively participation and active responsibility from the bottom up, by the Europeans themselves, their cities and regions. In the past, we have been too much of a spectator and critical observer in the EU.

“Europe Bottom-Up” Platform

For this reason, the Stiftung Zukunft Berlin is developing a digital cooperation platform together with its partners and the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. This platform is designed to provide cities, regions and various initiatives with a tool for exchange across national borders. It is a tool that makes it easier to learn from each other and to arrange and carry out joint projects. The explicit goal is to strenghten the European unification and to attract others to it through the joint presence on the platform.

Initiatives

The platform is based on the long-term experience of Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fenster"A Soul for Europe" (a European cooperation in the cultural sector) and the grassroots group of Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fenster"Wir sind Europa" (for the European dialogue with urban societies) and connects itself to Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fenster"Cities for Europe" (a network for European cities that are committed to Europe and work for European cohesion).

Board

The platform is strategically guided by a board consisting of members of the European Parliament and stakeholders from culture and civil society. The board provides strategic support for the platform. Its members function as disseminators. They promote the platform at events and initiate strategic partnerships.

Members of the board are: Gabriele Bischoff (MEP), Emil Boc (Mayor of Cluj-Napoca), Kathrin Deventer (Secretary General of the European Festivals Association (EFA), Hella Dunger-Löper (President of the Landesmusikrat Berlin), Lena Düpont (MEP), Rafał Dutkiewicz (Former Mayor of Wrocław), Tomasz Frankowski (MEP), Ulrich Fuchs (Programme Director of the European Capital of Culture Marseille-Provence 2013), Mariya Gabriel (EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth), Barbara Gessler (Head of Unit „Creative Europe“), Hannes Heide (MEP), Dieter Kosslick (Former Director of the Berlin International Film Festival), Hannah Neumann (MEP), Niklas Nienaß (MEP), Doris Pack (Former MEP), Hannes Swoboda (Former MEP), István Szabó (Film director)
